BASIC INFERTILITY

The incidence of infertility is currently on the rise and it effects 10 – 15 % of the population. Inability to conceive within one year of married life indicates the need for a work up  consisting of examinations and investigations.

COMMON CAUSES OF INFERTILITY

Ovulatory Disorders

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) being the most common

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

With Tubal Factor Infertility

Endometriosis

A condition involving the lining of the uterus

Male Factor Infertility

Male infertility is commonly due to deficiencies in the semen

EVALUATION OF AN INFERTILE COUPLE

Test for Ovulation

  • Follicular Monitoring
  • Hormone Essays

Test for Tubal Patency

  • TT & DNC
  • HSG (Hysterosalpingogram)

  • Diagnostic Laparascopy

Test for Male Factor

  • Semen Analysis
  • Andrology Consultation (if needed)

Evaluating Uterine Cavity & Endometrium

  • Trans Vaginal Scan (TVS)
  • Endometrial Biopsy

TREATMENT FOR BASIC INFERTILITY

Once the basic tests are done and are seen to be relatively normal, the initial treatment includes :

  • Ovulation Induction with Follicular Monitoring (which helps to precisely time the ovulation)
  • Surgery and / or counseling with the expertise of an andrologist in cases of anatomical problems and coital difficulties

FURTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS

If the test results indicate a more serious underlying issue, a more advanced infertility treatment is advised.

If the patients fail to conceive within six months of ovulation induction (with varying drug regimes), we proceed to the next step, which is IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination)
